Michigan has an extension for REAL ID enforcement, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver's licenses and identification cards from Michigan at Federal facilities, nuclear power plants and federally regulated commercial aircraft until October 10, 2018. Refer to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for further information and updates on the State of Michigan’s status

REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the states and the Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, the federal government will not allow Michigan residents carrying a driver’s license or ID card that does not comply with the federal REAL ID Act to board domestic flights, or enter federal buildings, nuclear plants or military bases unless they have another accepted identity document.
