General


  1. Where do I make online payments for my Perkins, Health Profession, Nursing, and/or long and short term institutional loans?
  2. Heartland ECSI is the billing service provider for Michigan State University that is processing student loan payments and sending monthly bills for your Perkins, Health Profession, Nursing, and/or long and short term institutional loans. Online payments for your Perkins, Health Profession, Nursing, and/or long and short term institutional loans can be made on Heartland ECSI's website.

  3. Are 1098E's tax forms available on the Heartland ECSI web portal?
  4. Yes, 1098-E’s are available on Heartland ECSI’s web portal. Your 1098-E will also be mailed to your address of record unless you have selected to only receive your 1098-E electronically on ECSI's web portal.

  5. How do I create and access my account on ECSI’s website?
  6. Follow these steps to create and access your account to make payments:

    1. Go to https://heartland.ecsi.net and select Register.
    2. Follow the steps under Register to create a New Profile.
    3. Select Connect an Account to connect your loan to your profile. You will need your Heartland Key, located on your bill, to complete this step. You can also request your Heartland Key from Heartland ECSI by calling (888) 549-3274.

  7. Where can I mail a payment?
  8. Payments must be made payable to Michigan State University and should be accompanied by a copy of your bill or coupon. Payments should be mailed to:

    Please be sure to include your account number or student ID number on your payment.

  9. Where can I make payment in person?
  10. Payments can be made in person at the Hannah Administration Building; personal check, money order or cashier checks are accepted, please do not pay in cash.  There is a drop box located outside of room 110 (payments slips are located by this drop box) for payments to be left during business hours.  After business hours payments can also be deposited in our night depository located in our circle driveway on Auditorium Road.  Please be sure to include your account number or student ID number on your payment.

  11. Will recurring payments set up on ECSI’s website be automatically cancelled when my loan is paid in full?
  12. Recurring ACH payments are automatically cancelled when the balance is paid in full. Recurring credit/debit card payments do not automatically cancel. Recurring credit/debit card payments can be cancelled when the balance is paid in full by accessing the ECSI website (https://heartland.ecsi.net) or by contacting customer service at (888) 549-3274.

  13. What are the hours of operation for ECSI?
  14. Customer Service Representative is available Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 8:00pm EST. You can call ECSI at (888) 549-3274. A live chat is also available on ECSI's website (https://heartland.ecsi.net) in the lower right-hand corner.

  15. When is the Receivables office open?
  16. Our office is open Monday - Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern time. Our staff is assisting customers remotely and may not be available for walk-in service. If you wish to speak to a member of our staff in-person, please call or email our office to schedule an appointment.

  17. Am I able to view my loan information in the Student Information System?
  18. Yes. In the student system navigate to Student Accounts, MSU Loans and then choose View Loan Balances. All short-term, federal Perkins Loans and Health Profession Loans, and other long-term loans are listed with limited details.

    Please Note: These figures do not include any loan amounts you may have borrowed under the William D. Ford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan Program or FFEL or may not include all institutional loans borrowed.

    If you borrowed under the William D. Ford loan or FFEL programs, please link to National Student Loan Data System for loan amount and contact information.

    Loan payments cannot be made through the Student Information System.


Short-Term Loans


  1. How do I apply for a Short-Term Loan?
  2. Please see the PDF for instructions on applying for a short-term loan.

  3. What do I do if I was approved for but have not received a short-term loan?
  4. If you completed a short-term loan application, please allow 2-3 business days for your bank to process the transaction. If it has been longer than 3 business days since you were approved for a short-term loan but have not received the funding, please contact our office via telephone at (517) 355-5140 or email LoansReceivable@ctlr.msu.edu.

  5. When is my short-term loan due?
  6. The due date is listed on the promissory note at the time it is signed. After the initial signing of the loan note you will be sent billing statements from ECSI stating the due date. You can log onto ECSI’s website or the Student Information System at any time to view details including the due date.

  7. If I am issued a refund of excess financial aid will my Short-term loan be repaid automatically?
  8. No, excess financial aid will not be applied to your short-term loan balance automatically. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate repayment of their short-term loans through ECSI’s website or by mail or in-person.

  9. Can I defer repayment of my short-term loan?
  10. No. Short-term loans do not offer a deferment or forbearance option. All loans are due in full by the due date to prevent collection activities.

  11. Can I request an extension of the due date for my short-term loan?
  12. No. MSU does not grant extensions or renegotiate the terms of the short-term loan promissory note once signed by the student.

  13. Am I being charged interest or fees for my short-term loan?
  14. Many short-term loans do accrue interest. Late fees, if not paid by the due date, are also charged for most short-term loans. Additionally, there is a $25 fee for each check/ACH payment returned on your short-term loan account. Interest and other fees are listed on the promissory note at the time of signing. You can view details for your loan on ECSI’s website or our office is available by email (LoansReceivable@ctlr.msu.edu) or telephone (517) 355-5140 if you wish to inquire what interest and fees pertain directly to your loan.

  15. Can my short-term loan hold be lifted?
  16. If a hold has been placed on your student account in relationship to a short-term loan, the loan must be paid in full for the hold to be removed.

  17. How long does it take for my short-term loan hold to be lifted once I have paid?
  18. Once payment sufficient to pay the balance has been posted to your account, the hold will be automatically lifted by the next day.


Perkins, Health Profession and Institutional Long-Term Loans


  1. Whom do I contact for deferments, postponements, and cancellations?
  2. Please contact the Michigan State University Loans Receivable Department for all questions regarding deferments, postponements, and cancellations at (517) 355-5140 or by email at FederalLoans@ctlr.msu.edu.

  3. How can I view my Perkins, Health Profession or Long-term Loan e-signed promissory note?
  4. If you signed your promissory note electronically before Fall 2021, you will be able to view the promissory note through MSU's StuInfo website, under the “Loans” menu option. If you signed your promissory note in Fall 2021 or later, your promissory note is available to view on ECSI's website. Once you have logged into your ECSI web account, promissory notes are stored in the documents section.

  5. Where can I find information regarding a federal or long-term loan that I have applied for, but not received?
  6. Please see the Office of Financial Aid website for information regarding the acceptance and status of your loans. If your loan has been approved in the Student Information System, information regarding refunds can be found on the Student Accounts webpage.

  7. I received an email or documents in the mail related to an exit interview, what do I need to do?
  8. Per the terms of your loan, you are required to attend an exit interview upon leaving MSU as a student. If you have received an email requesting you attend an exit interview, please contact our office at (517) 355-5140 to schedule your exit interview. If you are unable to appear in-person for an exit interview, please call our office to conduct your interview over the telephone.

    If you have recently received documentation mailed to you for an exit interview that you did not attend in-person, please contact our office at (517) 355-5140 to conduct your exit interview over the telephone. Also, sign and return a copy of the Truth in Lending statement and the Rights & Responsibilities we have included in these documents. The Form B included must also be completed and returned to our office. A return envelope is provided to return these documents to our office.
